Desktop Mode provides access to a full Linux desktop environment on your Playnix console, allowing advanced users to install additional software and customize their system.
Unsupported Feature
IMPORTANT: Desktop Mode is provided as-is for advanced users who want to tinker with their console. Playnix does NOT provide official support for Desktop Mode or any issues arising from its use.
Prerequisites
Required Hardware
Before entering Desktop Mode, you'll need:
- USB Keyboard - Required for navigation and input
- USB Mouse - Required for desktop interaction
- Your Playnix console
- Basic Linux knowledge (recommended)
Controller Limitation
The 8bitDo controller can't act as a mouse in Desktop Mode. A keyboard and mouse are mandatory.

Entering Desktop Mode
Step-by-Step Process
- Connect your USB keyboard and mouse to the Playnix console
- Power on the console and log into Steam
- Press the central button on your 8bitDo controller to open the Steam menu
- Navigate to Power
- Select "Switch to Desktop Mode" or "Go to Desktop Mode"
- The system will exit Steam and load the desktop environment
What to Expect
- The screen will go black briefly
- A Linux desktop environment (KDE Plasma) will load
- You'll see a taskbar, desktop icons, and application menu
- Steam will not be running
